The provostry of Wislikofen
The Propstei Wislikofen lives from traditional Benedictine values and combines these with a modern infrastructure and sustainable offers. A winning combination for our guests.
This is what we stand for
We reinterpret traditional Benedictine values and bring them to life for our guests. But what exactly does that mean? In a Benedictine monastery, as the Provostry of Wislikofen was for a long time, everyday life was defined by prayer and work (ora et labora). Prayer was there to break the daily rhythm of work, to relax and slow down. We want to continue this combination of work and conscious deceleration.

The historic premises of the Propstei Wislikofen provide ideal working conditions for seminars, workshops and courses, but also offer the opportunity to retreat, enjoy the peace and quiet and slow down. For example, the Room of Silence, the monastery church and the natural garden are available for this purpose. Or, of course, our offers from the course and framework program, which consciously address topics such as mindfulness, spirituality or meditation.

Hospitality is also lived in our house. This is also a central element of the Benedictine tradition, which we live up to with our regional, sustainable cuisine and our overnight accommodation in the old monastery cells. It is just as important to us that we take our guests and their concerns seriously and seek good solutions in an honest dialog. Authenticity and sincere relationships are important to us. That is why we listen to our guests.

The history of the Wislikofen provostry
The beginnings of the Wislikofen provostry date back to the 9th century. At that time, an Alemannic settler named Wizilin built a farm. This was subject to a feudal obligation to the nobles of Waldhausen. In 1113, the nobles of Waldhausen donated their possessions in Wislikofen - including the Wizilin farm and other small villages - to the Benedictine monastery in St. Blasien. A good 20 years later, the first small monastery was built on the site where the Wislikofen provostry stands today.
During the Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648), the Palatinate War of Conquest (1688-1697) and the Wars of the Spanish Succession (1701 to 1714), the provostry was repeatedly a place of refuge for the monks from St. Blasien, as their abbey in the Black Forest was destroyed. Each abbot of the new monastery in Wislikofen expanded the provostry. The different architectural styles bear witness to this, which is also proof that the Wislikofen provostry was a lively place of work and prayer. In 1807, the provostry and the mother monastery of St. Blasien were dissolved. The Catholic parish of Wislikofen was given free use of the church. The last provost remained in the village as parish priest.
Between 1973 and 1975, the Wislikofen provostry, which was in danger of collapsing, was completely renovated. The old building mass was preserved as well as possible, so that today the Provost's House is considered a historical gem. In 1976, the seminar hotel and educational center of the Roman Catholic Church in Aargau was opened in the venerable rooms of the former Benedictine monastery.
